As the ABC Unified School District faces an uncertain future due to the Coronavirus, the Board recently had to cut almost $10 million from the district budget, and things are looking more and more bleak daily. In these trying times, I am someone who will listen to you and make common sense decisions for the betterment of our children. The safety of our children is the highest priority for me, and balancing our budget without sacrificing our children's education is paramount. I also want to make sure that Measure BB funds that we are all paying for is spent in accordance with our Facilities Master Plan. I am supported by many local elected officials and have a proven track record in the community as someone you can trust. I'm a community leader with strong ethics, integrity and a Dad who cares.
I am a product of ABC schools (Bragg, Haskell and Gahr) and graduated Cum Laude from San Diego State University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Criminal Justice.  I am currently working on my Master's Degree from the University of San Diego in Law Enforcement Leadership.  Education is extremely important to me, and I am very much involved in my children's education. I'm familiar with IXL learning, reflex math, accelerated reading (AR), typing agent, Pearson realize and many other programs. I want to keep class sizes as small as possible and get our students back in the classroom as soon as it is safe to do so. Virtual and hybrid learning are the two options that the County and State are offering us, but there is nothing better than five days a week in the classroom with our outstanding teachers. "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela
Measure BB
As Chair of the Facilities Committee, I surveyed all of the schools in the ABC District. I couldn't believe it, but the schools looked like they did when I attended them in the 80's and 90's. Our committee created a new Facilities Master Plan, and I'm proud to report that we trimmed the fat and cut $377 million from the previous plan. We cut "wish list" items and focused on what would make our kids safer and improve their educational experience.  Measure BB was put on the ballot by the Board a short time later and whether we like it or not, it barely passed.  Now, we are all paying higher property taxes, and I can assure you that I will make sure that the funds are spent in accordance with the Facilities Master Plan. It would be ideal if we could finish all of our projects and return some money to the taxpayers.
Safety is my #1 priority and it is extremely important to me. So much so that I volunteer at Nixon Academy every semester to protect our kids as a member of our California Golden Bell award winning Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program. I have helped Bragg Elementary get its program started with Principal Heilig. We make sure kids aren't bullying each other, and that they are all getting along. We even installed a "Buddy Bench" at Nixon. I will make sure that Measure BB funds are spent on the best safety technology to keep our kids protected and that they are safe from the Coronavirus with the right protective gear. Hand sanitizer, masks, washing stations and more so critical in preventing the spread of the virus. It has also been a passion of mine to read to kids at elementary schools during national Read Aloud Week, and I have been on Whitney Live two times discussing the dangers of alcohol, vaping  and drugs. With my 21 years in law enforcement, you can count on me to put safety first and protect our children.
With the coronavirus in full force and the lack of sales tax revenue in the State of California, the Board had to cut almost $10 million from the ABCUSD budget recently. So far, these cuts haven't changed class sizes or impacted the education of our children, but what do we do if the negative economic impact continues?
I have served in State government for many years and know how to work within a budget. I can be trusted with your property tax money and will make the right decisions in regards to our budget. I feel that the Board must always balance the budget and even start to build up our reserves to address our growing deferred maintenance. I am a candidate that can make the cuts if necessary and use common sense in making decisions affecting our kids' future. In addition, I was PTA President at Nixon Academy for the past two years, and we donated tens of thousands of dollars to the school to improve our kids' education. Our Education Foundation through a jog-a-thon has also raised significant funds for our school. I feel parent engagement is critical for our district and can have a tremendously positive impact on our school's budget.
